The John Oliver Effect

Over the years Oliver's research into pieces of legislation, and his subsequent reporting of them on his show 'Last Week Tonight', has resulted in changes being implemented, known as the 'John Oliver Effect'. Such matters as ending unfair bail requirements, FCC changes to Net Neutrality, exposing the Miss America pageant claims about it's scholarship programme, and raising awareness of civil forfeiture laws have all been subject this effect.

Philanthropy

On 4th June 2006 Oliver forgave $15,000,000 worth of medical debt owed by 9,000 people in America. He had purchased the debt for $60,000 and forgave it live on air on his TV show 'Last Week Tonight'.
